Tower of London

Day 4

Still in London! Today, we spent the morning attending mass at Saint Paul's Cathedral followed by a yummy brunch at a French cafe.

The rest of the day was dedicated toward touring the Tower of London, to which this post is dedicated too. I took many pictures, the fortress was magnificent.

Some things I learned about the Tower...
1) It has served as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie for exotic animals, the Royal Mint, a public records office, the home of the Crown Jewels, and most notably a royal prison.
2) Although many seem to think torture was commonly practiced within these walls, less than 50 people were actually subject to it, and when they were it were on the highest most cases of treason.
3) There were only a handful of actual executions done within the Tower. Three women who I am studying in my Cambridge Course were among them. Queen Anne Boelyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of future Queen Elizabeth. Catherine Howard, the same King's fourth wife for crimes of adultery. And Lady Jane, a 16 year old girl in the unfortunate position of being in line for the throne.

The Tower is located on the River Thames, so it offered beautiful sight lines for the city and the Tower Bridge . I took many many pictures! Enjoy :)
